The Met Office has issued MORE severe weather warnings for heavy snow and ice for Kent tonight, tomorrow and into Thursday, and for those of us with children - even though today all schools in this part of Kent managed to open today - it's never a good idea to get complacent! It's good to know about school closures as soon as possible to avoid risking taking the car out on potentially hazardous roads, only to have to head home as you discover the school gates remain locked.

Your child’s school will have their own procedure which they should have already told you about to inform you if they are closed. If you don’t know what the procedure is at your child’s school, call them and ask. You can also check by listening to local radio stations in the morning and checking on local websites (see below).

Listen to BBC Radio Kent, KMFM or Heart FM Kent in the morning for details of school closures, or try:

  • The Kent Messenger online school closures search

  • Heart FM Kent school closures

  • Find your school's website and look for updates

If you are still unsure as to whether your child's school is closed or not, consider calling the school office or even going to the school. There may be an answerphone message or a sign on the school gates giving details of the school closure and what you should do.

You shouldn't assume that your child's school will automatically close if weather conditions are bad. Not sending your child to school when the school is open will count as an unauthorised absence on your child's record. If your child's school is open but you are unable to get your child to school due to adverse weather conditions, always call the school to explain why your child will not be attending.

If radio or television announcers are advising you only travel if absolutely necessary, remember that the Department for Education considers travel to school, both by pupils and staff, as essential. You should always take suitable precautions if going out in adverse weather conditions.

We'll also be posting details of any school closures in Cranbrook, Sissinghurst, Goudhurst, Kilndown, Lamberhurst, Sandhurst, Benenden, Horsmonden and many more on Cranbrook People that we hear about, so do be sure to check back regularly for details.
