What's the problem with our speed bumps?

It's risen its ugly head again in last week's Courier, but the topic of speed bumps in our high street seems to cause a negative reaction whenever they are mentioned.

Speed bumps ARE appropriate for Cranbrook!
At the moment there are several in situ at various points along the high street and up towards Cranbrook School, and apparently, many local people feel they are unsightly and 'lumpy' to drive over.
I really don't get it! I think they are unobtrusive, and do their job exactly as intended - which is to slow traffic down and make the roads safer for other drivers and pedestrians. And the Kent Highways report backs this up, and proves that since they were put in in 2003, the number of accidents and injuries has declined substantially.
Think of the alternatives assuming we all agree that 20mph is the right speed to go through the town at - traffic lights at either end of the high street? Those ugly flashing signs that oh-so-helpfully inform you how fast you are going? Please no!

I think most people agree that they don't like them because they are too high - I've certainly scraped the underside of my car several times on the one right in the high street, however the ones near the school don't seem so bad. Visually though, I probably agree with you, and I certainly don't view them as unsightly or a blight on the town.
