Summer is here (despite dire weather warnings for torrential downpours for the rest of the week - I'll ignore those for now!) and we are finally able to think about reliably enjoying some outdoor sports and activities.

Nothing beats a village green with a game of cricket underway, even if you have no idea what is happening like myself! Whether you are a tennis fan, golf addict or cricket enthusiast, Cranbrook has a wealth of facilities to support you in your chosen area.  With so much on offer locally it would be great to see some reviews, suggestions or warnings from you, post your thoughts and comments here for us all to see as always.

I'm married to one of the world's biggest lover of everything sports related, so courtesy of his comments - plus inputs from locals and sports clubs themselves, here's the cream of the crop in terms of local sports clubs for the summer 2010.

I'll start with something a little different that you may never have heard of, but which is rapidly gaining momentum in the UK. Polocrosse combines the thrill of polo with the skill of lacrosse, and is incredibly fast paced and thrilling to watch. The Kent Target Polocrosse Club is based at Risebridge Farm in Goudhurst, and are always keen to hear from potential new members.

Cranbrook continues to be a thriving rugby community and the Cranbrook Rugby Club offers a great mix of sporting and social opportunities. Thus summer, a three day rugby camp is on offer and a few places still remain. As you'd expect, the rugby club premises are always buzzing, head over there for a beer and have a chat with anyone in the bar about what's going on and when, they're always delighted to tell you!

It's no surprise the beautiful Weald is home to some of the most spectacular golf courses in the world. Hemsted Forest Golf Club has been around since 1969, and enjoys a fabulous reputation for great match play and 19th hole drinks in the converted oast clubhouse. Flexible, cost efficient membership packages always available including executive, evening and junior memberships.

Cranbrook Cricket Club is an extremely well supported local club for within the Kent area. Fixtures for August include Bodiam (away) on August 10th, Headcorn (home) on the 17th August, and Rumwood (home) on the 31st August. Get out and give the guys some good old fashioned crowd support!

The Bowls Club in Cranbrook has been established since the 1900's, and currently has around 60 active playing members, ranging from 11 to 92 years old! Over 60 fixtures are planned each year plus regular gala events and they are always looking for enthusiastic new recruits.

Cranbrook also has good range of tennis options, including the Sissinghurst Tennis Club. 2 courts, a great clubhouse, hundreds of members and a fun, friendly, 'non-cliquey' atmosphere make this one of the most popular in the area. A number of teams play in the local leagues, and regular club night and coaching sessions are on offer.

Keep watching this week as we'll be reviewing more clubs over the next few days. In the meatime, don't forget to add details of your favourite team, club or local sports venue!

Cranbook Squash Club is great - 50+ players and usually a fiercely competitive club league (doesn't matter what standard you are you can still get involved) - good fun. Regular social events too.
