Are you planning on getting fit in the New Year?

Last night my husband muttered something about a half marathon or two he's planning for the New Year, and it seems already his mind is turning to how to get fit in preparation. Bonkers.

We're coming at Christmas this year from totally different ends of the scale, as my mind, on the other hand, is currently 100% focused on where my next mince pie is coming from, and how much wine, truffles, gooey french cheeses, chutneys, pickles, cold meats and champagne I need to get in to tide me over the next couple of weeks, as I park myself on the sofa with a box of the kids chocs and watch Miranda, Strictly and as many dreadful Christmas specials I can handle.

But for those that have far more self-control than me (anyone?) then you may already, like my husband, be thinking about the New Year and trimming off a few pounds after the Christmas excess. Where to go then, and how to start?

A great place to begin is the Weald Sports Centre, which has a huge range of courses and sessions, plus offers personal training to kick-start the new-you. Pilates, swimming and the gym are hugely popular in this well managed and friendly centre, or you may prefer to pick something a little more obscure. A pulsing, Latin-inspired Zumba class, Hatha yoga or a gruelling boot camp course perhaps? Pop in and have a chat with one of the team, who are always happy to recommend the best plan tailored for you.

Down the road in Goudhurst, there's Risebridge of course. Smaller and more personal, this health club and gym really have built up an astonishingly good reputation across the Weald. Reasonable prices, stunningly pretty surroundings and the knowledgeable staff make this a wonderful place to work on your overall health and fitness. The popular One2One system is tailored for the 80% of the population who have never visited a gym before, and are complete beginners. The system makes getting fit a fun experience, and gently ensures that exercise becomes an integral part of your lifestyle.

What have I missed? Anywhere else you'd personally recommend, within say a 10 mile radius? I'd love to hear about any running clubs in particular.

But in the meantime, if you could just pass that remote control...

Dulwich Prep does a running club I believe in the evenings, not sure if it's just for parents of kids who go there or for anyone? Might be worth contacting them?
