AN APPEAL to save a crumbling Cranbrook church tower is close to its fundraising target after being given £71,000.

The vicar of St Dunstan's Church, the Reverend Richard Williams, said the grant from English Heritage left fundraisers needing to find just £25,000 to restore the stonework.

Mr Williams expressed gratitude to English Heritage for its offer and to members of the Friends of St Dunstan's for their hard work in securing money from a variety of sources.

He said: "We are still about £25,000 short of our overall target but, God willing, we shall be able to restore our tower to its former glory, repairing the ravages of the weather over the past 500 years."

To offer support, call the church on 01580 715861 or e-mail office@stdunstanscranbrook.org.uk
